Our Program: AFHA stands for Adult Family Home Agency. We connect open-hearted people and adults with developmental disabilities to create happy families. That’s our mission. We choose people with the right combination of heart, compassion and purpose to become a Family Home Provider. FHPs can be traditional or multi-generational families, single parents or individuals. But they are all warm, stable and have the capacity to include another family member. FHPs receive professional training, ongoing support, financial compensation and a gratifying sense of enrichment.

What is a developmental disability? Anything that causes a delay in a person’s development. Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism or a brain injury before the age of 18 are typical causes of developmental disabilities.

How to become a Family Home Provider. The first step is to contact us for an orientation. We’ll talk about details, what you should expect and show you examples of working family relationships. From there we can answer all your questions and begin the application process.

Family Home Provider Support. AFHA provides ongoing support for FHPs including some or all of the following, depending on need: Staff Support, Respite, Support Groups, Community Resources Research, Professional Consultation, Emergency Response Service, Crisis Preparation and Planning.

Family Home Provider Requirements. To become an FHP, you must own, rent or have a lease on your home. You should have the financial resources to maintain a safe and clean home in San Diego and Orange Counties. All family members must have a criminal record clearance, an incident free drug screening and meet all Independent Options’ AFHA training requirements.
